Poet Laureate Nominations
Nevada Arts Council
716 North Carson Street, Suite A
Carson City, Nevada 89701

To Whom It May Concern,
Sam Dehne [a 1962 Air Force Academy graduate and former Fighter Jet and Bomber Pilot] has all of the prerequisites that will make him the Poet Laureate that Nevadans and all Americans can be proud of. Sam has spent the last 12 years wholeheartedly  dedicating his life to promoting various forms of poetry AND to participating in and inspiring commentary at public events throughout northern Nevada. As a matter of fact, he has given Public Testimony on more than 4,200 documented occasions .
Often with a semanticistically syncopated poetic and musical flair that Will Rogers and Mark Twain would be proud to possess.
Thousands of citizens have seen Sam Dehne in action through the last 12 years; both live in person and at hundreds of television appearances. And they can vouch for the fact that his style, diction, articulation, and savior faire are what Nevada should be looking for. These myriad extemporaneous "performances"... without the use of Q-cards, Teleprompters, makeup, or re-takes... vouch for his expertise as a speaker, spokesman, and poet.
Dehne has already proven that he is capable of carrying out the duties of promoting poetry as an art form, and he certainly has been an on-the-job inspiration toward promoting more commentary at public events.

Here are just a few reasons why Nevada would be lucky to have Sam Dehne as its Poet Laureate:
* Sam's training and inspiration toward poetic articulation of words were initially inspired during his years as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. And he is thankful for the training he received and is proud to be a graduate of that esteemed institution.
* Songs and music ARE poetry. Sam has compiled 16 musical/poetic CDs of Live Performances with 100s of  "Americana-style" songs that are akin to poetry... with music. He has created an internet site for citizens to be able to see the contents of the CDs at: www.renocitizen.com/yankees.htm
* Sam has performed his music/poetry at more than 800 live concerts... all for charity.
* Sam has written and co-written several songs/poems.
* Sam is an expert guitar player and vocalist; with articulation of words that are second to none.
* Much of Sam's public commentary would be viewed as poetry by the British monarchy of old.
It is impossible to even try to imagine that any other candidate can match Dehne's impeccable qualities of showmanship, compassion for the musical/poetic arts, dedication to public service, and humbleness-inspired friendliness, quick wit, and good manners.  Sam's mother would approve this nomination.
Reno mayor and city council, Sparks mayor and city council, Washoe county commission, and many other public bodies have been witnesses to Dehne's articulated "Publications Credits" that are all documented on official video tapes. These officials have been eye-witnesses to Dehne's extemporaneous poetic abilities on hundreds of occasions. Enclosed is one of Dehne's "Publications Credits" in the form of a copyrighted musical/poetic Albums. Video tapes of numerous other "Publications Credits" are available upon request.
Sam Dehne has all the makings of a great Poet Laureate... a position he deserves.

Subject: Brief Statement/Vision of Poet Laureate Artist Nominee Sam Dehne:
[father, writer, boxer, fighter pilot, bomber pilot, airline pilot, union leader, orator, watchdog, philosopher, newspaper editor, newspaper reporter, song writer, musician, singer, poet, television (boxing) announcer, and entertainer - quirky, tenacious, fortuitous, patient, fair, feisty, tolerant... and humorous]

To Whom It May Concern,
I, Sam Dehne, am honored by this nomination to be Nevada's Poet Laureate. And to be recommended by such an esteemed speaker and writer in his own right as Mr. Guy Felton makes the situation all the more humbling.
If chosen for this position, which I feel ultimately qualified to fill with talented diplomacy, I can assure you that you will be forever thankful to yourselves for making such an astute decision. Nevadans will also be grateful.
I am humbly confident that my 4,300 original and unique "poetic" presentations to public bodies... as well as to audiences of up to 1,000 citizens... at all the local government bodies and other arenas exemplifies my poise and ability to capture an audience's attention with my articulation and spin of a phrase.
Furthermore I have performed poetic music (often with accompaniment by my trusty guitar) in front of public officials and citizenry audiences sometimes of more than 1,000 citizens at well over 800 Charity concerts in the last several years. These concerts have often been received with rave reviews.
My Vision for Nevada is for it to become the Entertainment Capital of America. As Nevada's Poet Laureate, I will help this fine state create and maintain a wonderful reputation, and I will strive to take her into new realms of excitement.
If selected I am prepared to serve Nevada.
Sincerely,
Sam Dehne
