Was last month's Reno Gazette exposé of the collusion between the Airport, the Air Guard (NAG), and some of our "leaders" in Washington right on target - or what?
Did you know that revenue of $40 billion has now made gaming (gambling) THE National Pastime!
Press Release - 25 April, 1996
DEHNE SAYS "NO" TO SECRET MEETINGS.
Gerald Garafaldi
Sam Dehné, as a measure of protest against Reno City Council's defacto secret meetings in California, has withdrawn from City Council try outs. Dehné, an enlightened capitalist, said that it is an insult to citizens to hold secret meetings. This outrage is exacerbated by the fact that the city manager scheduled the meetings to establish "6 or 7 major priorities for the coming year..." If Dehné' were appointed to the Council, he would boycott and refuse to attend secret meetings like this. "Enough is enough!"
Dehné, who had applied for deposed Ward 3 Councilmember Janice Dalski's post, suggested to some of the Council members that they should refuse to attend the secret meetings.
Dehné stated that he also objects to the method of replacement of Council members. "Why should the Council members from all the other Wards choose who will represent Ward 3? Ward 3 citizens have no input to the selection process. Is this democracy? Further stinking up the farce is the fact that 4 of the 6 Council members, who will do the selecting, live in the affluent Southwest...".
Dehné has not decided whether he will campaign in the fall elections. Whoever the Council picks will have a big headstart. On that issue he said, "Citizens of each Ward should choose who they want to represent them. Do we want New York and Florida electing Nevada's U.S. Senators? No. In the same vain, folks from Ward 3 shouldn't have folks from Wards 1, 2, 4, and 5 selecting their Council member."
After the interview, Dehné indicated that he was going to adhere to a retreat facilitator's advice and "...take solace in his room to internalize his thoughts and emotions of the day and square himself for the next day's series of challenges.".

Lee Dazey, a woman who has been doing excellent work for Citizen Alert for years, was recently told that the funding for her position might be canceled. This is really bad; although there is a possibility that a grant will be approved later in the year. But in the meantime, this very talented and tenacious citizen advocate is without a job.
Is the Defense budget being cut too much?
Why did Reno's Airport Authority (AAWC) cut down scores of beautiful big trees? Haven't those trees been a natural barrier against airport noise pollution?
1. Have you donated your blood lately? It is a good thing to do. You help others and you rejuvenate your own blood...2. Hedging your bet in Reno: A businessman made campaign contributions of $250 to Gibbons and $200 to Seale. These guys are trying for the same position!
4. The Reno Gazette has excellent reporters. Shouldn't management let loose of the reins - so citizens can read fair and objective news reports? Guilty or not, nothing that Councilperson Dalski did justifies the veritable witchhunt and crucifixion that has taken place...
5. Cory Farley is one gnarly idea man. Maybe HE should be on the City Council. His latest idea - let the candidate do the talking. Leave extraneous actors and frontmen out of the advertisements. If the truth is being told, let the politico get the credit. If lies are being told, citizens don't want the lies blamed on some extra in the scene.
6. Did you know that there is a petition, signed by 100's, that objects to the wasting of taxes on the airport landgrab?
7. Are there really that many more dangerous train derailments these days? The latest wreck was a 39 car derailment in eastern Nevada. The Justice Dept just went on record in opposition to the rail merger. Gadfly prediction: No merger...
8. Reno Airport traffic hit a new high. Just another reason for Senators Bryan and Reid, Governor Miller, and the City Council to start an all-out push to move the Air Guard to another area (Nellis AFB or Fallon NAS) - NOW. Sell or lease the prime land where the NAG is now. Use that $$ for the move...
9. There is a SOUTHEAST vacancy on the Reno City Council. Will it be filled by somebody from the "southeast"? Or will Reno soon have 5 of its 7 Council Members from the affluent Southwest?
10. It appears the Reno Bowling Stadium is scavenging people away from established local Bowling Alleys. Is anybody surprised? Local Bowling Alley owners are watching their own taxes support the competition. Been there, done that?
10a. Are Home Depot, Walmart, and other huge companies going to do the same thing to other types of long-time local businesses?
11. A new computer "land speed" record was broken in March. Information was transferred at the rate of a trillion bits per second. That is the ability to transfer 300 years worth of newspapers in one second. Will books become obsolete?
12. Isn't the right to cop an insanity plea in murder cases an "insane" concept of its own accord? Do you give a hoot if the person was insane when he killed your friend or loved one? Talk about insanity...
13. Do you think it has sunk in yet, - that some 400 workers were able to keep their jobs; thanks in part to The Reno Citizen's efforts to have the NAG convert to the C-130 cargo plane. (The NAG desired F-16 fighter would have gobbled 100s of jobs.)
13a. The question still persists though: Why aren't there any black pilots out there? Or female? or Hispanic?
14. The two biggest Lobby groups in Washington? Gun advocates and the "gaming" industry. Casinos changed the word from gambling to gaming. A game? You know - one of those deals where you put down your $50. And they take your $50! It was further reported that the biggest lobby group in California represents the Prison Guards.
15. What a joke for the Airport Authority to blame the City Council for the landgrab mess at the airport... because City Council members don't go to Airport meetings? Those Airport Board members, who were appointed to represent the City Council (and citizens indirectly), should be reporting to the City Council monthly. They never have. They thumb their noses and try to do important things secretly. Who are they responsible to?
16. Wasn't it nice to see Reno City Council members, Judy Pruett and Candice Pearce, finally scrutinizing the Rewana Farms landgrab (and the Airport Board)? They need to follow through...
17. Prediction: The railroad merger will not happen, or will be smaller in size.
18. When did wholesomeness become something to be ashamed of?
19. Have you noticed that since the arrival of The Reno Citizen, more and more ordinary citizens are standing up and being heard? They've been appearing before the City Council and other bureaucratic agencies and speaking up against the Fat Cats and Top Dogs...
20. Remember this: When Fat Cats appear at the City Council, they are usually being paid. Citizens aren't...
21. Can't most of the rail merger objections (noise, blight, danger, etc) be made about the airport? Just about the only difference (and admittedly an important one) is that the airplanes don't tie up ground traffic. Just like the trains; once upon a time, there were just a few airplanes at Reno...
22. Why doesn't Dole pick 3 (or 4) Vice Presidents?
23. If ALL eligible Americans would vote, wouldn't the Democrats ALWAYS win?
24. Why is long-time citizen advocate, Lee Dazey, of Citizen Alert losing her job; right in the middle of her attempts to expose possible problems and conflicts of interest at Reno's Airport?
25. Aren't those old Doris Day movies (Pillow Talk, etc) fun to watch? Why don't they make them like that anymore? Wholesome sexual innuendo... At the end, there is a comfortable feeling. Not like today's movies... Guess they were too corny.
26. People ask why TRC doesn't write about more "good" stuff. It's because - just about the time something good happens, something "badder" happens.
27. Besides, it's "good" to point out some of the bad things that are happening - so that people will be aware. Ignorance is not bliss...
28. What those appointed people on the Airport Board and the Nevada Air Guard leaders should do is act as if the $$millions of dollars (of America's taxes) they are spending for the Rewana landgrab are coming out of their own personal bank accounts... Maybe the glove should be on the other foot.
29. Hasn't the Reno Gazette Sounding Board come about 75% boring? Or is it the people calling in?
30. It was reported by real authorities that the Airport Authority (paid for by YOUR taxes) hired a law firm with a lawyer who is the close relative of one of the Board members. So, again this group of appointed members has exceeded the boundaries of decorum. If you were on that Airport Board, wouldn't you resign before you got caught up in this terrible clutter?
31. Thank you, Dennis Myers. For those who don't know who Myers is, he has been pursuing the Reno Airport Board for a long time, and has exposed numerous infractions and breaches of conduct...
32. Pat Lee, the high school sophomore who received a lot of publicity about his writings, is quite a good writer. He wrote a story for the Reno News & Review (about Reno's new Curfew) that showed an irreverent sarcasm; with a gift for organization of subject matter. (Not to mention a wit that some of the Reno CityCouncil wouldn't appreciate.)
33. Why not move the NAG to either the Carson City Airport or the Minden Airport? There is plenty of room there - especially at the Minden Airport. And there's less potential for danger, pollution, noise, and blight. Think what it would do for the economy...
34. Is what that former Congressman, Dan Rostenkoski, did any worse than Congressional Reps. burying their heads in the sand? The Airport is trying to use a known obsolete Noise Study to seize homes from tcitizens.
35. Soccer Security: The current 6 week trial is going to cost a lot. And who decides if the trial period was successful? What is the criteria? Why not use some of those Auxiliary Police who have graduated recently - to monitor the games?
36. Is "misinformation" anything Airport Tony V and his Airport Authority don't agree with?
37. The Reno Citizen was created to disagree with disagreeable activities - with civility. And it tries to follow this guideline, most of the time... How are we doing?
38. Patriotic citizens wonder: Should the NAG spend USA taxes on advertisements for an expensive BBQ and a C-130 flyover? Aren't citizens going to see and hear enough of them on a daily basis, anyway?
39. "Canned laughter": Don't you hate it when fake audiences laugh in the background on TV shows telling you when to laugh - usually at something that isn't even funny? Shouldn't you make your own decision as to what is funny? Check it out...
40. Shouldn't those Reno Airport "Trustees" be elected? After all, they handle $$millions of dollars of YOUR taxes...
41. The terrible parachuting accident that killed one of Reno's police officers is a reminder of just how small Reno still is. It seems everybody knew him...
42. Why not have the Guardian Angels be the monitors at the soccer games? They are trained for this type of work, and they are respected...
43. It is interesting to observe that the Aging of America has sort of helped make trapped gas dysbarisms more acceptable. (A trapped gas dysbarism often turns into an evolved gas dysbarism and is more commonly known as a fart.)
44. Many months ago your Citizen Gadfly exposed a defect in the Reno election process: Each City Council member (who should be selected solely by citizens in their own ward) is voted for by all wards of the city. That would be like having New York, Florida, and all the other states deciding who Nevada's two senators should be... It is wrong!
44b. Why is it wrong? Because in Reno, the $Big Bucks$ come from the Southwest. And everybody knows that big bucks (for TV, Billboards, propaganda pamphlets, grunts, etc) buy elections. These big bucks are then dedicated to candidates that the rich want elected...
45. Vote against the candidate with the biggest propaganda billboard blight. It can only mean that person owes that much more to Fat Cat contributors, and that there will be payola due.
46. The latest Campaign Contribution reports indicate that Gibbons can buy the most votes. Remember, vote against the big campaign blight billboards. Show your individuality and character...
47. Has anybody in the southeast ever been invited to a meeting of the Southeast District council? Where are they? What do those APPOINTED agents talk about there?
48. Did you know the United States government just voted against a "tax iniative" like the one that candidate Gibbons is claiming credit for. They said it is redundant. It was reported that 95% of Nevada tax issues are decided by a much larger majority than just 2/3rds anyway... So what's all the fuss? By the way, if the initiative passes, will it then take a 2/3rds majority to REDUCE taxes?
49. If he is such a tax advocate, why did he keep wasting precious taxes flying those obsolete RF-4s; even after the commander stated that colonels "don't go to war"?
50. The new Reno Airport slogan: "Things Just Keep Getting Better." Do you think Rewana Farms (or Donner Springs, or Smithridge) agree? Not likely...
51. The Airport Authority is floating a $34,000,000 bond to pay for a parking garage. Who pays if there is a default? Wouldn't be the taxpayers, would it?
52. The Aid to Dependent Corporations confiscates about 5 times more USA taxes than Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Which is the heavier "welfare" burden?
53. Did you know that in The Reno Citizen, citizens will find almost as much imformation, in 6 to 8 pages once a month, as they will in the other Reno media in 30 days?
54. Citizen Gadfly (and TRC) repeats himself on important issues for at least two reasons: 1) TRC is going on the World Wide Internet - bringing new readers on board every day, AND 2) Some issues are critical enough to bear repeating. You don't find quite the same type of questions being asked in other Reno media...
55. If the latest Reno City Council "try-out" players could understand just half of the stuff in that giant package of stuff they are going to be quized on, wouldn't they qualify for city manager?
57. Reno's city manager says a "lot of mistrust exists" among the city council. Retreating to California will not eliminate that mistrust. Reducing the amount of money Fat Cats can give to members will though. Forbidding them from voting on issues that affect their big contributors will though. Things like the crucifixion of former council member, Dalski, don't help the mistrust situation either...
57. Spring Cleaning at the Reno City Hall. Let's hope the city manager recognizes the hard working talent - and keeps IT. Reno doesn't want an AT&T type situation; where the hard workers are eliminated and Top Brass gets fat pay raises...
58. Government in action? Citizens appear before City Council and propose solutions. But should the city manager get a $10,000 bonus for implimenting those proposals?
59. People were invited to attend the "...celebration of the 5th anniversary of Gibbons's return to Reno following his service in the Persian gulf" massacre. (But why was there a picture of a Russian plane on the top of the invitation?)
59b. How about an invitation to the "celebration of the 16th anniversary of Patty Cafferata's return to Reno following her many years of service for Nevadans."?
60. The Airport goes to the FAA with a defunct obsolete Noise Study. The FAA is hoodwinked and sends money. The FAA finds out the truth. Does the FAA ask for the money back? No. Your son loses his bike. You give him $100 for a new one. He finds the old one. Do your want your $100 back? You bet...
62. Do you find it difficult to picture this conversation at the recent private Council retreat? One council member saying to the other; "If you will will vote for so and so for the council, I will go along with you on that project you have been pushing so hard for." This is why secret meetings are outlawed...
62b. Was the Reno City Council retreat warranted? Just maybe; under one Webster's definition of "retreat - an asylum for the aged and mentally ill..."
APRIL FOOL'S DAY IN MAY
Claude Puck Hopper
(Our special article for April Fool's Day last month received many supportive comments. As a result, the Reno Citizen will offer an April Fool's article more often.)
Have you heard that the Reno City Council has made the following decisions?
* Property owners may now choose which two days each week they will water their lawns... and they may change these days each week to accommodate their other life priorities. One council member commented: "We expect the citizens of Reno to trust us. Why shouldn't we trust them to decide when to water their lawns?".
* Water saved by the 2-day-weekly yard watering plan will absolutely, positively NOT be used for new Casino expansion and subdivisions.
* Members of the Reno City Council will no longer be able to vote on issues that would benefit their major campaign contributors.
* Tom Herndon will be required to represent the voters and citizens in his district; rather than the Casinos in his district.
* The City Attorney will be required to sit through the entirety of each and every meeting of the Reno City Council. She may no longer let deputies assume her role.
* The City Council will recall the appointed Airport Board of Trustees and replace them with citizens who are mandated to take into account the well-being of the entire community. Not just special interest groups.
Why does TRC dedicate so much attention to this landgrab of Rewana Farmlands? Because it needs to be exposed and thwarted - NOW. The Airport is working overtime to try and make it a done deal-NOW. They are trying to snatch $$millions and $$millions of your taxes (to go along with the $$millions they already have) to force people off their own land. And they are using an out-of-date Noise Study to the execute this scheme.
It is not their money! They are asking for and accepting it under false pretenses. They should stop taking this money and they should return what they have to Washington. Stay tuned...
EXTRA! EXTRA! - THE RENO CITIZEN LATE FOR FIRST TIME
Editors
Readers have been phoning and E-Mailing asking about their May issue of The Reno Citizen. The problem is due to the adverse effect of the Ninety Ninety Theory of Project Projections: "The first 90% of the project takes the first 90% of the time. The last 10% of the project takes the other 90% of the time..."
Staff has been working diligently to get TRC onto the World Wide Web - so that our supporters can read it as soon as each issue is created. Finally, today, the World Wide Web accepted The Reno Citizen. Fanatics called from Paris and Rome to tell us they found April's issue on their computer and enjoyed it very much. They said they are looking forward to future issues with entranced curiosity. As noted on page 1, you too can find it on the WWW.
A caveat: Some Internet Providers do not yet have the sophistication to display The Reno Citizen properly. TRC recommends that you use Reno's Accutek Internet Service. Beautiful graphics, fast, and cheap... (702) 826-7500.
